Geographic Region:

Facebook/Twitter volunteers can be located anywhere with internet access.  In-office volunteers serve at the clinic’s central Phoenix location.

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers must have their own transportation to and from the clinic. Bilingual is a plus, but not required!

Save the Family helps children in homeless families by treating the whole family with programs to break the negative cycles of poverty, abuse, and homelessness. We strengthen the Valley’s communities by facilitating the transition of families to financial and emotional self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Opportunity: 2010 Tucson Homeless Street Count

The Tucson Planning Council for the Homeless is the lead group organizing the 2010 Homeless Street Count in Tucson.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

Volunteers are needed to count homeless people outside shelter on the morning of January 28th, 2010.

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers must be able to walk. Your own transportation is a plus, but not necessary as volunteers without their own car will be placed in a team that can provide transportation.Volunteers must be 18 or older and must work in teams of at least 2. Bilingual language skills are not necessary, but are a definite plus!

Volunteer Opportunity: Spirit of God Ministries

Spirit of God Ministries are homeless shelters, churches, and programs serving the needy.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

Spirit of God Ministries has a homeless shelter which provides meals three times a day, and also opens their gates approximately three times per month for mass feedings.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Volunteers are required to have their own transportation, and the city bus comes within one block.
  • Light, medium, and heavy work available.
  • Food handler card is not required, but individuals with a food handlers card are a plus!
  • Volunteers should be 18 and older. Youth looking to volunteer should contact Spirit of God Ministries to inquire about parent/guardian requirements.
  • Bilingual is not necessary, but is a plus!

Spirit of God Ministries has two locations, serving those living in their homeless shelters and opening their gates three times a month to serve the hungry in the surrounding area. They are located at:

Volunteer Opportunity: St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance


To Promote the elimination of hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency through education and advocacy.


A hunger free Arizona.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

  • Pack, sort, and re-pack food boxes, bulk food, or food from food drives. Volunteers work on assembly line.
  • Help with client services, client intake, loading client boxes and filling client orders.
  • Administrative duties such as filing, data entry, opening mail, and answering phones.

Geographic Regions Served:

Phoenix, Glendale, Surprise, Flagstaff

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers are required to have their own transportation to and from the site. Food handlers cards are only required for Kids Cafe volunteers (please contact agency for information on this opportunity). Volunteers age 12 and older are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, but minors 16 and older can be unaccompanied if volunteering for school. There is no maximum age; SMFBA’s oldest volunteer is 96! Bilingual is always a plus, but never a requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Warehouse positions require the ability to stand, lift at least 25 pounds at one time, bend, twist, and use hands and arms for work. Light duty and office positions are available for volunteers who do not meet warehouse requirements.

Volunteer Opportunity: Neighbors Who Care


The comfort of home and the dignity of independence;at Neighbors Who Care, community volunteers help the elderly live at home.


The elderly are able to live at home for as long as feasilble with pride, dignity and independence.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

Volunteers may choose to volunteer in any service offered to a NWC client:

Business Assistance, Caregiver Relief, Dinner Delivery, Friendly Visiting, Minor Repairs, Office/Clerical, Reassurance Calling, Shopping/Errands, Transportation, Special Projects, Committees

Geographic Regions Served:

Sun Lakes communities and south Chandler primarily, although transportation to doctors’ offices may be needed valley-wide.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Own car and ability to drive clients valley-wide in some cases
  • Fingerprint clearance (paid for by NWC and done on-site at New Volunteer Orientation)
  • Must be 18 years of age minimum; some special projects allow volunteers under 18 with adult supervision
  • Bilingual/multilingual (including American Sign Language) a plus, but not necessary

Volunteer Opportunity: One Small Step


One Small Step has been collecting new and good used socks since 2001 from individuals, clubs, thrift stores, and groups that hold sock drives for us. We sanitize and repackage them for distribution to people in need through clothing banks, shelters, schools, and other social agencies. To date, we have provided more than 135,000 pairs of socks to people who are very, very grateful to have that need met.

The clothing bank (Clothes Cabin) is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 to 3.  

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

  • Hold sock drives in their neighborhood, at their place of work, or among friends in clubs or churches they belong to.
  • Process the socks on Wed. mornings, 9 to noon, in Chandler/Gilbert area
  • Sort, steam, bag, or hang clothing for Clothes Cabin
  • Conduct clothing drives (where we would specify current needs)
  • Publicize the activities and do fund-raising for the operations
  • Donate needed supplies: socks, new underwear, detergent, bleach, postage, colored paper
  • Donate funds for purchase of new socks

Volunteer Opportunity: Maggie’s Place


Maggie’s Place is a community that provides houses of hospitality for expectant women who wish to achieve their goals in a dignified atmosphere. Following Catholic social teaching, we recognize that we are responsible to and for one another. In this way, we celebrate and provide for the next generation.

Maggie’s Place is always on the look-out for volunteers to assist with sorting donations, cleaning and organizing, performing minor home repairs, preparing a meal, babysitting, and providing house coverage (answering phones, etc.). In addition, Maggie’s Place accepts one-time and special project volunteers for activities such as hosting a baby shower, yard work, painting, etc. Please contact the house you’re interested in volunteering at for more information.

Cannery Volunteers

Bring your group of 10 – 40 willing volunteers for hands-on fun and a great service to families in need! You can repackage pasta, beans, and other dry foods from bulk bins into family size packages for food bank distribution. You may soon be known as the Bean Baggers or Pasta Packers!

Spots are available for groups on weekdays or Saturday – daytime – for just two hours. AAFB accepts both regulary-scheduled and occasional volunteer groups.  The Mesa Cannery has offered its facility for the benefit of food banks. The most important ingredient in the process is YOU!
