Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers may be required to lift upwards of 20 pounds. Volunteers are required to provide their own transportation, and some kitchen prep volunteers may need to provide their own Food Handler’s Card. Volunteers must be 16 or older to serve in the kitchen, 8 or older to work in the warehouse. Spanish speaking volunteers are always needed.

Volunteer Opportunity: Sojourner Center

Mission:

To overcome the impact of domestic violence one life at a time.

Vision:

To expand domestic violence shelter and transitional housing in our community so no victim is ever forced to retrun to a violent home.

Mission:

To provide comprehensive dental care to homeless children, women, and men.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

  • Maintain Facebook and/or Twitter accounts
  • Work in front or back office
  • Volunteer Dentists needed
  • Volunteer Hygienists needed

Geographic Region:

Facebook/Twitter volunteers can be located anywhere with internet access.  In-office volunteers serve at the clinic’s central Phoenix location.

Volunteer Opportunity: Spirit of God Ministries

Spirit of God Ministries are homeless shelters, churches, and programs serving the needy.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

Spirit of God Ministries has a homeless shelter which provides meals three times a day, and also opens their gates approximately three times per month for mass feedings.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Volunteers are required to have their own transportation, and the city bus comes within one block.
  • Light, medium, and heavy work available.
  • Food handler card is not required, but individuals with a food handlers card are a plus!
  • Volunteers should be 18 and older. Youth looking to volunteer should contact Spirit of God Ministries to inquire about parent/guardian requirements.
  • Bilingual is not necessary, but is a plus!

Spirit of God Ministries has two locations, serving those living in their homeless shelters and opening their gates three times a month to serve the hungry in the surrounding area. They are located at:

Volunteer Opportunity: St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance

Mission:

To Promote the elimination of hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency through education and advocacy.

Vision:

A hunger free Arizona.

Volunteer Opportunities Available:

  • Pack, sort, and re-pack food boxes, bulk food, or food from food drives. Volunteers work on assembly line.
  • Help with client services, client intake, loading client boxes and filling client orders.
  • Administrative duties such as filing, data entry, opening mail, and answering phones.

Phoenix, Glendale, Surprise, Flagstaff

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers are required to have their own transportation to and from the site. Food handlers cards are only required for Kids Cafe volunteers (please contact agency for information on this opportunity). Volunteers age 12 and older are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, but minors 16 and older can be unaccompanied if volunteering for school. There is no maximum age; SMFBA’s oldest volunteer is 96! Bilingual is always a plus, but never a requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Warehouse positions require the ability to stand, lift at least 25 pounds at one time, bend, twist, and use hands and arms for work. Light duty and office positions are available for volunteers who do not meet warehouse requirements.

Volunteer Opportunity: Maggie’s Place

Mission:

Maggie’s Place is a community that provides houses of hospitality for expectant women who wish to achieve their goals in a dignified atmosphere. Following Catholic social teaching, we recognize that we are responsible to and for one another. Volunteer Opportunities Available:

Maggie’s Place is always on the look-out for volunteers to assist with sorting donations, cleaning and organizing, performing minor home repairs, preparing a meal, babysitting, and providing house coverage (answering phones, etc.). In addition, Maggie’s Place accepts one-time and special project volunteers for activities such as hosting a baby shower, yard work, painting, etc. Please contact the house you’re interested in volunteering at for more information.

Volunteer Opportunity: Association of Arizona Food Banks

Mission

To deliver food and quality services to food banks and to foster relationships in support of our commitment to eliminate hunger.

Volunteer Opportunity Available

Front Office Volunteer

The Front Office Volunteer is considered a regular part of the AAFB team. The primary role of the Front Office Volunteer is to provide general office administration. This typically involves answering the phones, making calls to  AAFB member food banks to update their directory listings, and entering information into AAFB’s donor/contact system.

Responsibilities include:

  • Make calls to AAFB member food banks to update their directory listings
  • Enter information in the donor/contact system
  • Assist with Association mailings. This includes printing letters and stuffing envelopes.
  • Support meetings and events
  • Sort and date-stamp incoming mail
  • Light filing

Schedule:

The work schedule is flexible depending on the needs of the volunteer and AAFB. Minimum volunteer support needed is 3 to 4 hours per day 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., 3 days per week Monday through Thursday.
